What is Spiritual Direction?

If you’ve ever wondered, What is spiritual direction? — you’re not alone.

The word “direction” can sound like someone telling you what to do. But spiritual direction is not about advice-giving or directing someone’s life.

Spiritual direction is a historic practice within the contemplative Christian tradition. It is a one-on-one listening relationship rooted in the belief that God is already at work in your life.

What Does “Direction” Mean in Spiritual Direction?

In spiritual direction, the “direction” does not come from the spiritual director.

It refers to tending to the direction of the Spirit — the subtle movements, invitations, questions, longings, resistances, and shifts already unfolding within you.

My role as a spiritual director is to help you slow down and pay attention to where God — however you name the Divine — may be present in your real, everyday life.

What Happens in a Spiritual Direction Session?

In a spiritual direction session, we slow down together.

We notice what feels alive and what feels heavy.
We sit with grief, desire, doubt, transition, and discernment.
We hold questions without rushing to resolve them.

Spiritual direction is not therapy.
It is not life coaching.
It is not about fixing you.

Instead, it is a grounded, non-directive space of prayerful listening.

Over time, many people find that spiritual direction helps them:

  • Recognize patterns in how God has been moving in their lives

  • Deepen trust in their own spiritual experience

  • Navigate seasons of transition with greater clarity

  • Respond more freely to what feels aligned and life-giving

Who Is Spiritual Direction For?

Spiritual direction may be especially helpful if you are:

  • Navigating an identity shift or season of becoming

  • Discerning vocation or next steps

  • Moving through grief or major life transition

  • Wrestling with faith questions or church wounds

  • Longing to feel more centered and spiritually grounded

While my work is rooted in the contemplative Christian tradition and in following Christ, I hold open space for how you name and experience the Holy. Spiritual direction can be a supportive space whether you feel deeply rooted in faith or are walking through doubt.
